Weeping
The Weeping Process
As the ground temperature begins to warm, heat will begin to penetrate several inches into the soil. When the temperature rises to 50 degrees Fahrenheit at about a foot underground, the vine will begin to come to life.
The roots begin to absorb water and nutrients and sap is excreted at the tips of canes that were pruned the previous year. The vine is preparing itself for budbreak which will occur shortly. The sap provides energy for the upcoming growing season.
