Cordon de Royat
The use of Cordon de Royat in Vineyards
It is known for giving the grower a lot of control over the height of the vine and canopy placement. Because the amount of sun exposure can be controlled, grapes grown on these trellises often have nicely developed tannins and pigments. It is also easy to prune vines with this trellis system and allows for a “sanitary” vineyard.
The vine’s trunk is kept short and close to the ground. Permanent branches, or cordons, are trained along a wire. There are several spurs on a cordon, each producing two canes. This trellis system is very efficient for mechanical harvesting
