Sanford Winery is located in the cool climate of the Santa Rita Hills AVA. Establishing their winery in 1971, Richard and Thekla Sanford were truly ahead of their time. They picked one of the only locations in the world that rivals the Burgundy region of France for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay production.

The Sanford & Benedict Vineyard and Rancho La Rinconada Vineyard has become institutions in Santa Barbara Wine Country. The Sanford & Benedict property contains the oldest Pinot vines in the region. This vineyard produces wines of considerable depth and complexity that is quite rare for New World Pinot Noir.

The winery makes two Chardonnays, four Pinot Noirs, and a Sauvignon Blanc. Winemaker Doug Fletcher takes extreme care throughout the wine production process. An innovative gravity racking system is used to preserve the delicate characteristics that Sanford Chardonnay is known for.

The 2000 Pinot Noir is an unusually powerful example of this varietal. The forward fruitiness of this wine is restrained by vanilla and cinnamon undertones. Sanford Winery is currently owned by the Terlato Wine Group. Anthony, John, and Bill Terlato own premium quality wineries throughout the world.

Actually the Terlato Wine Group is majority owner of Sanford, but there are other partners. In fact, Sanford has always been a partnership throughout its history. The current winemaker is Steve Fennell, who was formerly with Voss Vineyards and Trefethen, both in Napa. The new tasting room is beautiful and certainly worth the drive. And the wines are yummy!
