DESCRIPTION OF WINE TOUR
A visit to the Santa Cruz Mountains allows for beautiful coastal range vistas and some of the best up and coming wines in California. The climate of the mountains is perfect for grapes. The cool marine breezes and the abundant sunshine create a fabulous nursery for vineyards. While there, take a tour of the local wineries.
First stop on the tour is Soquel Vineyards. Peter and Paul Bargetto and Jon Morgan own this winery. The Bargettos are well known in the Santa Cruz wine country. The Bargettos grandfather and great uncle founded Bargetto Winery in 1933. This winery has a gorgeous view of the Monterey coastline and offers some of the region’s most award winning Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon. Next, visit Poetic Cellars, which is one of the newest wineries in the region. Katy Lovell obtains her grapes from her first winery, Rios-Lovell, located in Livermore. Each bottle of the Poetic Cellars label features a poem by Ms. Lovell’s partner Joseph L. Naegele.
Now, move along toward downtown Soquel and visit Hunter Hill Winery. This winery is located about two miles from town. Try some of their Pinot Noir and Merlot. Both wines have received numerous accolades. Then, enjoy a picnic lunch by the vineyards or in the winery’s gazebo. Afterward, round out the day with a trip to Bargetto Winery. Phillip and John Bargetto founded this historic winery in 1918. Bargetto Winery is the oldest winery in continuous operation in the Santa Cruz Mountains. This winery enjoys a long history of distinctive wines produced from mature vines.
