Take a drive south of San Francisco to the Santa Clara Valley. Here, visitors will find several wineries owned and operated by families with a long history of California winemaking. First stop is the Guglielmo Winery. The Guglielmo family has produced wine in the Santa Clara Valley since 1925. The third generation of this family has expanded the winery and the vineyards in recent decades. The tasting room, with wooden beams and terracotta tile, is meant to evoke the sense of old Italy.

Move a little further south into the Santa Clara Valley and visit Jason-Stephens Winery. The owner, Jason Goelz, worked extensively with Stephen Dorcich, another winemaker, to create wines for all tastes. Next, head back north toward San Jose. Creekview Vineyards has tasting rooms in San Martin and in downtown San Jose. The San Martin tasting room is opened on the third weekend of each month. The San Jose tasting room is opened Wednesday through Sunday. Creekview Vineyards is family owned and managed winery. Most of its grapes are grown at the estate. This vineyard grows Zinfandel, Petite Verdot, Malbec, Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. The family also uses grapes grown by other local vineyards. While in the San Jose area, stop at one of the many restaurants and wine bars for a bite to eat before heading back to the Bay Area.
