Paso Robles boasts over 26,000 acres of vineyards. Besides the area’s famed Zinfandel, varietals of Bordeaux and Rhone origin bring distinction to this section of California’s Central Coast. The long, warm growing season and the cooling, marine winds make for an ideal environment for complexity of flavor and smoothness in taste of the wines it produces.

For a nice day tour, start at Chumeia Vineyards. This winery started as a dream of partners Lee Nesbitt and Eric Danninger and their wives. Chumeia was established in 1999 and opened its tasting room in 2001. The vineyard is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel and Petite Sirah. Enjoy the tasting room or a tour and bring a picnic lunch.

Next, try a tasting at Meridian Vineyards. Besides the wine, try some chocolate or cheese or order a picnic lunch. Meridian also accepts private reserved tastings. Meridian is along the Highway 46 corridor, which is home to a number of wineries and vineyards. Enjoy a stroll through the flower gardens. The winery plays host to special events like weddings.

Eberle Winery is a good place to make the third stop of the day. Make a reservation for a picnic lunch of gourmet food and take in the views from the winery’s deck. Sign up for a tour and tasting in Eberle’s wine caves, which are 35 feet underground and the story of Paso Robles wine industry. Experience some of Eberle’s award-winning wines.

For the last stop of the day, go to J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines. Except for limited series wines, J. Lohr does not charge a tasting fee. For a late afternoon snack, use the picnic area. J. Lohr also maintains a tasting room in San Jose. The Paso Robles location overlooks the winery’s Seven Oaks Cabernet vineyards. Wines sourced from San Luis Obispo County, Monterey County, Paso Robles and Napa Valley are available for tasting.
