DESCRIPTION OF WINE TOUR

Paso Robles has some of the most diverse collections of microclimates of the many California appellation regions. Over 40 varieties of wine grapes thrive in its long growing season. Some of the grapes grown are Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Zinfandel, Viognier and Roussanne. The area is home to approximately 200 wineries. Take a wine tour in order to take in fully the majestic landscape of the region.

Start at Summerwood Winery. This winery rests among oaks and vineyards. Walk through the tasting room through French doors that open to a brick deck. Enjoy the views of the vineyards and the hills surrounding the area. In addition to tasting wine, visitors may purchase food, books, wine accessories and other merchandise. Summerwood offers tours by appointment as well. Summerwood is home to an inn too.

Second on the tour is Peachy Canyon Winery. Its tasting room is in the Old Bethel School House, which dates from around 1886. Peachy Canyon is notable for its estate Zinfandel and other Rhone and Bordeaux varietals. Visitors can take in the vineyards and oak trees, relax in the gazebo or have a picnic lunch. At approximately 84,000 cases a year and nationwide distribution, Peachy Canyon is a well-known winery; however, it remains tied to the community. It also has a cottage for overnight guests.

Next stop is Castoro Cellars. Its Mediterranean style tasting room is nestled in Castoro’s Cobble Creek vineyard. Visitors walk through a grape arbor, cork trees and Zinfandel vines. Enjoy Chardonnay, Fume Blanc, Roussanne, Viognier, Pinot Noir, Barbera, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Primitivo and more. Also available in the tasting room are local artisan made products, gourmet foods and gifts.

The last stop on this day tour is Donati Family Vineyard. Its tasting room is located in a three-story European style chateau. Donati offers tours of the cellars, the property, processing area and the barrel room. Visitors may make use of the Bocce courts and the picnic area. The winery holds many special events. Tastings may include an un-oaked Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Blanc, Merlot, Claret, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Syrah. A relaxing tasting at this sustainable winery is calming way to end the day.
