DESCRIPTION OF WINE TOUR

When one thinks of California wine, often the first thoughts turn to Napa and Sonoma Valleys. However, what is not always well known is that Lodi is considered California’s wine grape capital. The first wine grapes in Lodi were brought from Algeria in 1857. The sandy loam soil and climate of Lodi, which lies just east of the Suisun Pass, is excellent for grape growing. Every wine lover should take a tour of some of Lodi’s wineries.

Take a tour, start with Gnekow Family Vineyards. Barry Gnekow has worked with some of California’s most prestigious wineries over the past 30 years. Many of Gnekow’s Zinfandel vines are over 80 years old. The Zinfandel wines of this vineyard often receive awards and high points by wine connoisseurs. Relax and relish some of the old vine Zinfandel and old vine Syrah.

The next winery is Berghold Estate Winery. At 85 acres, the vineyards produce Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot and Viognier. In 1986, Joe and Kay Berghold began growing grapes. They opened the winery and tasting room in 2005. The tasting room is located in a barn constructed in a Victorian-style. It is surrounded by fountains, garden, olive tree and the vineyards. The cigar smoker may relax in the gazebo.

Macchia Winery is a short trip away. Tim Holdener operates this winery, the name of which is Italian for “the spot”. He produces different Zinfandel varietals. Macchia sources its grapes from different California growing regions. One of its sources is a 140-year-old vineyard in Amador County. That vineyard is considered one of, if not, the oldest Zinfandel vineyard in the United States.

Last stop in Lodi is Peirano Estate Winery. Until 1992, the Peirano family had grown grapes to sell to other winemakers and produced a few batches of wine for family and friends. Lance Randolph, a member of Peirano’s fourth generation, then decided to take on the role of raising Lodi’s wine in the esteem of aficionados. Sit back and unwind amidst the lawn and shade trees.
