Wine Social Networks and Web Applications

Social networks and web applications have taken over the internet. Before 2004, nobody expected any sort of interaction online. Now, it seems that every popular website has some sort of social aspect to it. It has crept into every niche and market, and wine is no exception.

Some call these websites “Web 2.0,” but the jury is still out on what “Web 2.0” actually means. However, we do know that the term is cliché and I would avoid using it at all costs. For this article, the websites that have social networking features or complex programming will be referred to as web applications.

The development of Ruby on Rails and AJAX have enabled a new level of interaction between human and website. Web developers have utilized this technology to build websites that can solve problems and address issues that were once impossible.

For example, Snooth allows you to search over a million tasting notes. Bottlenotes matches wines to you based on your feed back. WineQ allows you to create your personalized wine club. Cork’d allows you to store and share tasting notes. Calwineries ranks wines and wineries based on popularity.

There is, however, a trade off between technology and usability. The more complex a website is, the harder it is to use. This becomes a problem because some of these websites provide a great service, but its all for not if you can’t use it. To address this, we will be discussing the major wine web applications and explaining how to use them.

We will be reviewing one application at a time, if you have a suggestion for an application you would like to see reviewed, feel free to comment below.

Hi malibualy, there are certainly others that know much more about this than me, but from what I have read, neglected vines need to be thoroughly pruned and should not be fertilized unless they are very weak. Here are some links that may be helpful: http://www.gardening-howto.com/pruning-plants/pruning-grapes.htm http://www.acburke.com/acatalog/A_C__Burke___Company_Pruning_55.html

Does anyone have any resources on how to revive a neglected vineyard? I have an incredible opportunity to make 1500 chard and pinot grigot vines into a functional vineyard that up until now only fed the deer.
