Interstate Alcohol Shipping Laws
As a result, direct shipping laws are all over the place. Some states allow you to have alcohol shipped straight to your front door, while others will file felony charges against the shipper. Here are some things that people are doing to get around interstate alcohol shipping laws. We don’t recommend that you do this, but its good to know what is happening.
Approach # 1
Wineries will not ship wine to people who live the above states; it’s just not worth it for them. However, most will sell it to people living in said states (over the phone). But this doesn’t solve the problem; the case of wine is sitting at a winery in California. There are companies in wine country that store wine (for a fee). So they will send someone to the winery to pick up the order and take it to their warehouse. At that point, the person who bought the wine is the owner, but is storing it in the warehouse’s facilities. Since that person is now the legal owner of that wine, they can send it to their address. Said person can ask the purveyors of the wine cellar for forms that would allow them to send the wine, then they send it to their own address.

Approach # 2
This is a much easier approach, but requires the participation of other people. If a person has a friend or family member that lives in a state that allows direct shipment, the wine can be shipped legally to them. Then that person can ship the wine into the state that prohibits direct shipping.
