Wine Bottle Sizes

Wine bottle sizes range from 1/4 to 20 times the size of the standard 750 mL bottle. Within this range, the correct volume exists for any occasion.

The Importance of Wine Bottle Size

A half bottle (split) may suit a romantic dinner for two. When attending dinner parties or other events, an oversized bottle of exquisite wine can make quite an impression.

Larger bottles are relatively rare, and may be etched with a special inscription. Expect to pay more than math would dictate when purchasing an oversized bottle. The contents are usually age worthy reds, or expensive sparkling wines. The following is a summary of wine bottle sizes:

  • Pony (.1875 L) 1/4 bottle
  • Split (.375 L) 1/2 bottle
  • Bottle (.750 L) 1 bottle
  • Magnum (1.5 L) 2 bottles
  • Double Magnum (3.0 L) 4 bottles
  • Jeroboam (4.5 L) 6 bottles
  • Imperial or Methuselah (6.0 L) 8 bottles
  • Salmanazar (9.0 L) 12 bottles
  • Balthazar (12.0 L) 16 bottles
  • Nebuchadnezzar (15.0 L) 20 bottles
