Resveratrol

Resveratrol is a molecule found in wine that has been shown to have anti-oxidant properties. These are beneficial for heart disease and boast overall health.

The Role of Resveratrol in Wine

Many attribute the connection between wine and health to Resveratrol. It has been proven to increase the life of fruit flies in experiments conducted by a group of American scientists. Finding this substance was a major step in isolating the actual reason for moderate wine consumers’ general physical well-being.

Resveratrol is found mainly in the seeds and skins of grapes. Red wine has a characteristically high concentration of resveratrol. This is one of the main reasons for the beneficial effects of red wine. It is also found in blueberries and peanuts.

Its anti-oxidant effects have been seen in many studies, and works in combination with quercetin. According to a Dutch study conducted by Dr. Michael Hertog, consuming 16-30 mg of quercertin a day has been shown to reduce heart disease in men by 50%.
