People and Institutions
There are many notable individuals, families and institutions that have made the California wine industry what it is today. These people have made a tremendous impact on the past, present and future of California wine.
Agoston Haraszthy
Agoston Haraszthy was born on October 30th, 1812 in Pest, Hungary. For his many contributions to grape growing and winemaking, he is known as the "Father of the California Wine Industry."
American Institute of Wine and Food
The American Institute of Wine and Food was founded by Julia Child, Robert Mondavi and Richard Graff in 1981.
Andre Tchelistcheff
Andre Tchelistcheff was born in Russia in 1901. During the Russian Civil War, he fought against the Bolsheviks in the Crimea, and then moved to France after the Communists took power.
Andy Beckstoffer
Andy Beckstoffer currently owns or manages over 3,000 acres of vines in Napa Mendocino and Lake Counties and sells grapes to over 50 wineries.
Ann Veneman
On Januarly 20th, 2001, Ann Veneman became the 27th Secretary of the Department of Agriculture. During her tenure, she was known as a moderate who worked on bipartisan issues.
Bob Trinchero
In 1947, Louis “Bob” Trinchero’s parents bought the famous Sutter Home Winery in St Helena. Louis became the winemaker in 1958.
Brother Timothy
Brother Timothy FSC recently passed away at the age of 94. The De La Salle Institute on Mount Veeder was his longtime home. Few individuals impacted the industry to the extent that Brother Timothy did.
Charles Krug
Charles Krug was born in Prussia in 1825. He was a political radical in his youth and eventually moved to Alto California where he was a neighbor of Agoston Haraszthy.
Copia
Copia is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit corporation that derives its name from the Greek Goddess of wealth, plenty and abundance. The property encompasses an educational facility, a cultural museum, two restaurants and surrounding gardens. Jeff Dawson currently oversees the gardens.
