Scott Henry Trellises
The Scott Henry trellis system originated in Oregon and is named after its founder. There are both spur trained and cane trained versions of these trellises.
The use of Scott Henry Trellises in Vineyards
Mr. Henry began planting grapes in 1972 and owns Henry Estates in Umpqua, Oregon. Because his vineyard had fertile soil and a temperate climate, vine canopy and grape yields were too high.
His first breakthrough was realizing that 4 canes per vine instead of 2 decreased yields. This caused the vine to spread out its energy into looser, more evenly spaced grape bunches. But dense, excessive canopy was still a problem and was delaying the ripening process. This put harvest at risk from late rains.
Scott Henry solved this dilemma by training canes both up and down, thus spreading out the canopy. This gave the grapes more sun exposure and allowed them to ripen earlier. While these trellises produce high-quality fruit, their maintenance is labor-intensive and expensive. The Smart Dyson technique is a spur trained version of the Scott Henry.
