The Lyre method is a spur trained, split canopy system.
The use of Lyre trellises in Vineyards
It is similar to the Geneva Double Curtain, but canes are trained up rather than down. Lyre trained vines are also less vigorous than the GDC. Training the canopy in this fashion is used as a defense against mildew by exposing grapes to more wind and sun.
This trellis system is typically used in high-yielding vineyards. It was developed by Dr. Alain Corbonneau in the 1980s in the Bordeaux region of France. It is now widely used throughout the world.
The trunk is about 36 inches tall with 2 cordons. Lyre trellises can sometimes be cane pruned, but this is more rare. They are also known as “U” shaped trellises.
