The effect of Calcareous Soil on Grape Growing
Calcareous soil has a pH between 7.5 to 8.5. They have a brown-tan color and do not retain heat efficiently. Calcareous soil drains well and often contains lime.
Vines grown in these soils naturally produce more sap. Grapes have low sugar levels and high acidity. Riesling and Chardonnay do particularly well in calcareous soil. Calcareous soils are the product of fossilized sea life and alluvial soils. They are common in flood plains.
Dry climates often have relatively fertile calcareous soils. Rainfall will leach basic nutrients out of the ground and increase acidity. They are typically relatively fertile.
