Schist
Most Schist is derived from sedimentary rocks that underwent one or more metamorphic transformations. Some is also made from igneous rocks, including basalt.
The role of Schist in Vineyard Soil
Different types of schist are named based on their mineral composition. They are not always named after the most abundant mineral. Specific types of schist include mica schist, graphite schist, chlorite schist, and garnet schist.
Most sedimentary derived schist was originally clay in riverbeds. Soils that are made from these rocks have a high level of mica, hornblende, graphite, and talc. Schist has been metamorphically altered under less heat and pressure than gneiss, which has a coarser grain.
