Basalt

Basalt is an igneous rock that can vary widely in appearance. It contains a significant amount of lime as well as several other minerals.

The effect of Basalt in Vineyard’s soil

Before it is physically and chemically weathered, it is black. It turns gray over time with exposure to the elements. As opposed to granite which is found in continental crust, basalt is abundant in oceanic crust. It is made of solidified lava flows.

The faster the lava cools and hardens, the finer the texture and crystals will be. Oceanic crust is made mainly of basalt, including the Hawaiian Islands.
