Sand
Sand is well-drained, porous, unfertile and easy to till. Vineyard roots are able to develop in these soils. By definition, sandy soils are made up of more than 70% sand.
The role of Sand in Vineyard Soil
They also seem to slow the spread of phylloxera. The louse does not seem to spread well in very porous, large particle soils. It prefers clay and silt. There are some vines in California planted on Vitis vinifera rootstocks in these soil types.
Sand is created by physical weathering and moved by water and wind. It is made of small particles of quartz that are have low plasticity and will not stick together. Sand does not provide many nutrients for grapevines, but is easy to till.
