Gravel

Gravel is a general term for small rocks that are porous, aerated and well-drained.

The role of Gravel in Vineyard Soil

Because gravel is not very fertile, root systems will penetrate to lower subsoils in an effort to nourish the vine.

Gravel is very common on the hillsides and floors of river valleys. Because gravel drains very well, roots usually grow to the lower subsoil in search of water and nutrients. The Medoc and Graves in Bordeaux both have primarily gravelly soils. The Dry Creek Conglomerate and Eastern Rutherford have similar geology.
