Soil Depth

Soil depth determines how large vines' root systems can grow. But the best vineyards have thin, porous topsoil and deep, well-drained subsoil.

The role of Soil Depth in the Vineyard

Vines grown in deeper soils have more consistent results year-to-year because they have a more secure supply of water and nutrients.

Deeper soils tend to produce more consistently high-quality and subtlety flavored fruit than shallower soils. These vines are also less susceptible to extreme weather patterns. Clonal and rootstock selection is also very important in regards to soil depth.

Grape vines do not like it when water pools on the surface of the ground around them. Erosion of topsoil is a problem in many vineyards. This can be caused by natural weather patterns as well as human actions. Cover crops are often planted to prevent this.
