The role of Vine Spacing in Planting Grape Vines
Close spacing will decrease sun and wind exposure a bit, but will also stress the vines by making them compete for limited resources. A mechanized harvest will impact the vine spacing of a vineyard. In this case, vineyard rows must be far enough apart to give the harvesting machines enough space.
Vine spacing between rows is usually 6 to 12 feet. Spacing between vines is usually 6 to 8 feet. If vines are to close together, their collective canopy will shade grapes. Rows of quadrilateral cordon spur trained vines are spaced further apart than double cordon vines. The opposite cordons are usually 24 to 30 inches apart.
