Early Grape Development

In the Northern Hemisphere, early grape development usually begins in March and lasts for about 60 days.
The Process of Early Grape Development
The grapes are still in an embryonic state and must undergo flowering before they begin to develop sugars. However, they do acquire both malic and tartaric acid as well as tannins.
This is a time when the tiny grapes are very susceptible to frosts, mildew, mold and disease. Much of the spraying against pests and fertilizing takes place during this phase of the vine’s life cycle. As the grapes grow in size, seeds become apparent and cells divide rapidly. When early grape development is complete, the number of cells in each berry will no longer increase.
