During the late 1970s, the Zaca Mesa Winery pioneered Syrah plantings in the warm, eastern parts of the Santa Ynez Valley. The 1993 Zaca Mesa Syrah took the wine world by storm.
Syrah, Grenache, Viognier, Roussanne, Mourvédre and Cinsaut are currently planted in Zaca Mesa’s Estate Vineyard. Located about 1,400 feet above sea level, the vineyard’s soil is well drained and produces a limited amount of high quality fruit. Many of the Syrah vines are planted on sunny hillsides. Ocean breezes moderate temperatures and allow for a long growing season.
Zaca Mesa currently produces Viognier with a bit of Roussanne, Chardonnay, 2 Syrahs and the Z Cuvee which blends Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre, Cinsault, and Counoise. All of the grapes are picked and sorted by hand.
