Windwalker Vineyard
In 1984, Arnie and Paige Gilpin established Windwalker Vineyard. The Gilpins make wine from their estate vines and also source grapes from other growers. I particularly like their Barbera.

Windwalker Vineyard is located in the Fair Play AVA in the Sierra Foothills. Owners Arnie and Paige Gilpin began planting their estate vineyards in 1984. They produce approximately 10,000 cases of wine a year.
Windwalker makes wines using fruit from their estate vineyard and also sources grapes from a handful of local vineyards. Some of their offerings include Barbera, Sangiovese, Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Fortified Muscat, and Port.
The Chardonnay is made in a big, buttery style and has quite a robust flavor. Windwalker’s Port is a blend of several traditional varietals from Portugal’s Douro Valley. It is made each year as a non vintage for added consistency. The Zinfandel is aged in neutral oak to retain the grape’s natural varietal characteristics and fruit forwardness.
But my favorite wine from Windwalker Vineyard is their Barbera. This is an incredibly focused wine that really clicked for me. It is very complex but at the same time it did not confuse my palate. It is a wonderful wine for pairing with medium bodied meat dishes.
The Gilpins also make a number of excellent blends. Their “Lady in Red” is a Bordeaux blend that has deep flavors and is very smooth on the palate. This wine has the long, lingering finish that is indicative of careful winemaking.
