Robert Hill Smith is from a renowned winemaking background. His family also owns Yalumba Winery in Australia and Nautilus Estate in Marlborough, New Zealand. Voss is a small winery located on the San Mateo Ranch in the Rutherford AVA. The 45 acre vineyard is named after the original Mexican land grant. It is planted with Merlot, Syrah, and Sauvignon Blanc.
Winemaker Brian Mox makes about 8,000 cases a year. He left MIT to enter the wine industry. Mox previously worked for Stags Leap Wine Cellars, Pine Ridge Winery, Laird Family Estate, and Etude Wines. He started a winemaking consulting business in 2003 and works for several other wineries in addition to Voss.
Voss makes several wines including Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Merlot, Syrah, Ocala (Syrah blend), and a Botrytis Semillon and Sauvignon blend. His Sauvignon Blanc is particularly good and has won much critical acclaim.
The Voss Sauvignon Blanc is a blend of estate grapes and fruit purchased from Oakville and Yountville. The Yountville grapes are grown in a cooler climate, and add acidity to this wine.
