Jon Engelskirger is the winemaker at Turnbull. He previously worked for Robert Pepi Winery in Oakville, Hanna Winery in Alexander Valley, and Silverado Winery in Stags Leap. Because the winery owns vineyard acreage in several parts of the Oakville AVA, Engelskirger has access to grapes grown in different conditions. This allows him to make some excellent blends.
Jose Ortiz has been the vineyard manager at Turnbull since 1995. Like Engelskirger, he previously worked at Robert Pepi Winery. He is in charge of farming the 150 estate acres that Turnbull owns.
The Turnbull “Black Label” Proprietary Red Wine is made with grapes grown in the eastern hills of Oakville. This wine is a blend of all five red Bordeaux varietals including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot.
Even by Oakville’s standards, their Cabernet Sauvignon is an extremely consistent wine. Turnbull uses grapes from several of their vineyards to make this Cab.
