Owner and winemaker Tom Kruse is a Chicago native who moved to California in his twenties. He made his first wine with a cider press and it was an instant hit with his friends and family. After this initial success, Tom began learning the ins and outs of boutique winemaking.
In 1971, Tom and his wife Karen purchased a piece of property near the town of Gilroy in Southern Santa Clara County. At this point, he quit his day job and began dedicating his full efforts toward winemaking. During these early years, Tom had success making sparkling wine, several roses and a Zinfandel that was made using carbonic maceration.
In 1997, Tom and Karen bought an additional 20 acres and began planting 12 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel and Chardonnay. The vines are trained using a quadrilateral cordon trellis system which spreads out the canopy and maximizes sun exposure. Pruning is a meticulous process that begins in January and ends in March.
Thomas Kruse Winery produces Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel and Chardonnay. Each of these wines is made with 100% estate grown fruit that is harvested when fully ripe.
