Sobon Estate

Mark as Favorite

Sobon Estate produces organic wines in the Sierra Foothills’ Shenandoah Valley AVA. Shirley and Leon Sobon established the winery in 1989. At the time they already owned Shenandoah Vineyards, which they founded in 1977.

To celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary, Shirley and Leon Sobon bought the old D’Agostini Winery and renamed it Sobon Estate. Other than the old vine Zinfandel, they completely replanted the vineyards. From the beginning, the Sobon Family has farmed this land organically.

Prior to entering the wine industry, Leon was a Senior Scientist at Lockheed Research Lab. He took an extremely analytical and meticulous approach to selecting his vineyard sites and planting the correct rootstocks and clones.

The Sobon Estate 2005 Special Reserve Zinfandel is, in the winery’s words, “A classic example of the ‘Amador’ Zinfandel style.” It has concentrated fruit flavors with well-rounded tannins. Along with 87% Zinfandel, 5% Petite Sirah, 3% Barbera, 3% Syrah, and 2% Grenache were blended in this wine.

The 2004 Vintners Selection Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of 82% Cab and 18% Cabernet Franc. The addition of Cab Franc gives this wine a floral quality and some minerality on the palate.
