Sloan Estate

Mark as Favorite

Sloan Estate recently released their inaugural 2000 vintage in 2004. Despite this label’s youth the 2000 and 2001 Proprietary Reds are already selling for high prices at auction. Sloan is one of the more difficult California wines to acquire.

Martha McClellan is the winemaker at Sloan Estate. She uses 100% estate grapes to produce Sloan’s Proprietary Reds. These wines are made primarily of Cabernet Sauvignon and also qualify for the Meritage label.

McClellan made 310 cases of the 2000 Proprietary Red. It has received excellent reviews from several major wine critics. This is a young wine that could age for 10 to 15 years. But it is made in a fruit forward, approachable style, and is drinking well now.

The Sloan 2000 Proprietary Red has delicious dark fruit flavors that include blackberry, cassis, and black currant. From its obvious oak, it also has chocolate and vanilla flavors. The wine has strong tannins indicative of a young Cabernet Sauvignon, but they are richly strong rather than harsh.

Bottles of Sloan Estate usually sell for between $200 and $300. Because it is nearly impossible to get on their mailing list, the only place to really get these wines is at auction or premium retailers.
