Screaming Eagle is one of the most recognizable cult producers in the Napa Valley. The winery owns Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc vineyards. Production is only 500 cases a year and is sold almost entirely through the mailing list or charity auctions. Members of the mailing list pay $300 per bottle.
Jean Phillips bought the 60 acre property in 1986. Originally Riesling, the vines were immediately converted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc.
In 1992, she hired winemaking consultant Heidi Peterson Barrett to make the first vintage. 225 cases of that wine were made. She has been with the winery ever since. A six liter bottle of the inaugural vintage recently sold for $500,000 at auction.
Charles Banks and Stanley Kroenke recently bought Screaming Eagle Winery from Jean Phillips for an undisclosed sum. They have enlisted expert vineyard manager David Abreu to replant parts of the vineyard.
