Sawyer Cellars is located between Highway 29 and the Napa River in Rutherford. Joanne and Charles Sawyer started making wine in 1995. With a 50 acre vineyard, but an annual production of only 4,200 cases, the Sawyers sell most of their grapes and use only the best for their limited wines.
The vineyard is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and Sauvignon Blanc. Joanne and Charles also own an additional 10 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon nearby.
In 1997, they refurbished an old barn on the property and built a modern winery inside. Sawyer Cellars only produces wines that are 100% estate grown and bottled. Winemaker Brad Warner joined Sawyer in 1999. He previously worked at Charles Krug Winery and Robert Mondavi Winery.
Sawyer Cellars produces Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, and a Red Meritage. This is a trademarked name must be made to certain quality standards using the traditional red Bordeaux grapes.
