Robert Sinskey Vineyards is a major proponent of sustainable grape growing in California. Robert and his wife Maria Helm-Sinskey own about 200 acres in the Carneros AVA and a 5 acre estate vineyard in the Stags Leap AVA.

In 1982, Mr. Sinskey intended to retire in the Napa Valley as a gentleman farmer. He bought 15 acres of vineyards and began selling his grapes to Acacia Winery and Chalone. But the winemaking bug soon bit him, and he began planning his own production facility a few years later.

The winery was completed in 1988, the same year that winemaking phenom Jeff Virnig came on board. Three years later, Virnig became the head winemaker at only 28 years of age. In conjunction with vineyard manager Kirk Grace, Virnig uses environmentally friendly methods to make his wine.

During the 1990s, Robert Sinskey Vineyards developed an outstanding reputation for Pinot Noir and Merlot. They have since expanded their wine selection and are currently gaining a following for Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.

I've always liked these wines. Fantastic Carneros Pinots. Sinskey has been at the forefront of biodynamics in California over the past 10 years and it clearly shows through in the wines.

The winery tasting is kind of expensive but well worth it. There's a kitchen inside that prepares tasty bites to go with the wines.

Highly recommended alternative to the typical Napa showroom.
