River Grove Winery

River Grove Winery was founded by Steve Plyman in 2000. Mr. Plyman owns 300 acres of vineyards in the Clarksburg AVA and specializes in single vineyard wines from his estate.

Plyman’s vineyard is planted with Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Grigio, and Syrah. River Grove makes several still wines and has recently turned out a nice sparkling wine as well. All are extremely affordable, due mainly to the fact that most wine consumers do not even know that the Clarksburg AVA exists. This allows the astute wine lover to enjoy some very thoughtful wines in a price range where most products are not very inspiring.

The premium River Grove Clarksburg Reserve Chardonnay is made from the choicest fruit in the vineyard. It undergoes 50%-75% malolactic fermentation and is fermented in new French oak barrels.

The 2002 Pinot Grigio is a delicate, slightly floral wine for an unassuming occasion. It has notes of melon over a citrus-dominated backdrop. At around $10, it is tempting to order by the case rather than the bottle.

River Grove’s Blanc de Blancs uses acidic Chardonnay grapes harvested from their estate vineyard. Producing sparkling wine in the methode champenoise is a difficult and expensive proposition. This is an impressive effort that delivers a sophisticated taste at a very reasonable price.
