PlumpJack Winery is located just east of Groth Vineyards on the Oakville Cross Road. The estate vineyard was originally founded in 1881. Nils Venge was the winemaker at the property during the 1970s when it was known as Villa Mount Eden. He worked for Dennis Groth from 1982 to 1994 and currently has two labels of his own: Venge Vineyards and Saddleback Cellars.

Over 85% of PlumpJack’s vineyards are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon. The majority of these vines were replanted in 1992. Soils are well drained and composed mainly of bale loam. The property annually receives 210 days of sunlight and 30 inches of rain.

Anthony Biagi is currently the head winemaker. He received a degree in fermentation science from UC Davis. Biagi’s Estate Cab is highly regarded and aged in 70% French oak for 19 months. He also makes an excellent Chardonnay from P&J Vineyard in the southern part of the St Helena AVA. PlumpJack has many loyal adherents of their wines.

I recently went to Plumpjack in June of 2006. I thought the wine was excellent. I bought a few bottles and can't wait to go back.
