Philo Ridge Vineyards is the original site of Vernon Rose’s Christine Woods Winery. Mr. Rose planted 3 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in 1976. In 2000, Buonanno and McKelvey hired Norman Kobler to plant Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris vines on the terraced slopes.
In 2001, Philo Ridge’s first vintage consisted of 167 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. These wines were released in 2004, and the Syrah won a Silver Medal in the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition.
The winery’s 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon was produced with grapes from the original vines planted by Vernon Rose. This wine was aged in 30% new French oak for 18 months. It was awarded Bronze Medals at the 2005 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition and the Los Angeles Fair Wine Competition.
The 2004 Philo Ridge Vineyards Pinot Noir has the classic black cherry, herbal, and jammy aromas and flavors that are expected from a great Pinot. This wine was aged in French oak for 20 months.
