Perry Creek Vineyards was founded by Michael Chazen. He fell in love with the Fair Play AVA on a business trip, and soon bought a piece of property that he would later plant with vineyards.
Chazen’s estate encompasses 155 acres and is planted with 70 acres of vines. The vineyards are located on a hill above the Cosumnes River. This is one of the major watersheds of the Sierra Foothills.
Because of numerous watersheds on the property, the vines are planted in extremely well drained soil. Over the millennia, water has percolated through the ground and leached out organic matter and nutrients. The vines are very stressed and cling to life with ferocity. This comes through in Perry Creek’s flavorful wines.
Like many wineries in the Sierra Foothills, Perry Creek Vineyards specializes in Zinfandel. Their flagship wine is the powerful, yet balanced ZinMan. This impressive wine won a gold medal at the 2003 California State Fair. They also make very good Chardonnay, Viognier, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot.
