Oakstone Winery is owned and operated by John and Susan Smith. The Smiths make a number of wines with grapes grown throughout the state. Their estate vineyard is planted with mainly with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. They also make an excellent Zinfandel with grapes sourced from the Paso Robles AVA.

In 1997, John and Susan Smith established Oakstone Winery in the Fair Play AVA. John has a Ph.D. in chemistry and worked in the medical industry for many years before trying his hand at grape growing and winemaking.

Oakstone’s 24 estate vineyard is planted mainly with Bordeaux varietals. The winery also sources Rhone and Italian varietals as well as the region’s ubiquitous grape: Zinfandel. Throughout the Sierra Foothills, varietals from France’s Bordeaux region and Rhone Valley have historically done very well.

Oakstone makes Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and a Meritage Blend from their estate vines. The Smiths are particularly gifted at crafting the right balance of fruit, alcohol, and acidity in these wines.

The winery also makes wine with grapes bought from a number of different growers. These include Sangiovese, Syrah, Petite Sirah, Viognier, Pinot Grigio, and Port. A very nice Reserve Zinfandel is made with grapes from Paso Robles.

Oakstone’s tasting room is the best place to find these wines, but you can also find them at local restaurants and retail stores. The winery also hosts music and entertainment on the property.
