O’Shaughnessy Estate Winery has a prime, south-facing vineyard in the Howell Mountain AVA. The property consists of 29 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon and 6 acres split between Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec.
The beautiful production facilities were designed by Michael Guthrie & Associates. The goal was, “that architecture should be in harmony with the environment, enhancing the beauty of the land, not detracting from it.”
O’Shaughnessy makes two different wines: a 100% Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon, and a Howell Mountain red Bordeaux blend that is mainly Cab. In 2003, this wine was made of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot, and 2% Malbec. 1,200 cases were made of this vintage.
The 2003 Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon was harvested quite late in the growing season (September 25th). The extended hang time makes this an extracted wine with 14.8% alcohol which is quite high for Cab. It was aged in French oak for 20 months. Only 145 cases were made of this wine.
