In 1977, Peter and Dr. Su Hua Newton purchased over 600 acres of land near the top of the Spring Mountain wine region. The hilly property varies widely in elevation from about 500 to 1,600 feet above sea level.
Soon after this acquisition, the Newtons embarked on terracing the hillsides and planting several red Bordeaux varietals. (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot) From relatively humble beginnings, the vineyard has since been expanded to 110 acres.
Newton Vineyard uses expensive, premium quality production techniques at every step of the winemaking process. Their estate red wines are aged in French oak and then cellared in caves for aging. The Newtons also own a tract of Chardonnay vines in the Carneros AVA.
The winery takes a non-interventionist approach to winemaking. Filtering is eschewed for the most part in an effort to let the grapes’ natural flavors and aromas shine through. Their wines include the unfiltered Cabernet Sauvignon, unfiltered Merlot, Red Label Chardonnay, and a red blend called, “The Puzzle.”
