Navarro Vineyards

The Bennett Family sells almost all their wine from the tasting room or via mail. Many restaurants in the North Coast also stock Navarro wine.

Bennett’s Deep End Blend Pinot Noir is one of my personal favorites of this varietal. He also makes two other versions of the grape. Each gets a different amount of oak treatment and has its own personality.

He also makes impressive Gewurztraminer with very low-yielding vines. It is fermented in small oak barrels. Navarro was one of the first California producers to get this finicky varietal right. For far too long, California growers gave up on Pinot because grape because it had little success in warm climates.

The Bennetts also make very good Riesling. This grape has been a disappointment in most of California, but not in the Anderson Valley. Navarro makes a complex Riesling with excellent clarity and distinctive minerality.

Rather than using pesticides, Navarro lets sheep graze in their vineyard at certain times of the year to keep the weeds down. Ted Bennett is quite an innovator and is always pouring interesting wines in his tasting room.

For my money, Navarro is the finest winery in California. Their workers are all fully-benefitted, their wines (quite a wide selection) are consistently very good, and their prices are excellent. You can buy ANY wine from Navarro, and it will be a solid value. Get on their mailing list...they have the industry's best flyer that comes out 3 times/year. (Mar Jun Nov).
