Wine Tours - Visiting J Lohr Vineyards

  • Paso Robles Exclusive Wine Tour

Paso Robles boasts over 26,000 acres of vineyards. The long, warm growing season and the cooling, marine winds make for an ideal environment for complexity of flavor and smoothness in taste of the wines it produces.

In 1972, Mr. Lohr planted his first grapes in Monterey County’s Arroyo Seco AVA. After this initial success, he began looking all over California for another premium grape growing property. He found what he was looking for in 1988, when he purchased 2,000 acres in Paso Robles.

J Lohr Vineyards has since become one of the most recognized names in California’s wine industry. The winery produces 3 different levels of wines at ascending price points: J Lohr Estates, J Lohr Vineyard Series, and J Lohr Cuvee Series. Mr. Lohr also produces 3 value driven labels: Cypress, Painter Bridge, and Crosspoint Vineyards.

The 2001 Cuvee POM is made in the style of the Pomerol AC, located on the Right Bank in the Bordeaux region of France. This is a blend of 96% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon. It was aged in 100% new French oak for 24 months.

The 2002 Cuvee PAU is made in the style of the Pauillac AC, located on the Left Bank (Medoc) in Bordeaux. A blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Merlot, this wine was aged in 100% new French oak for 24 months.

I enjoy the Paso Robles tasting room, but it is a bit remote from the San Francisco Bay Area. They also have an old tasting room by downtown San Jose where they have some of their winery operations as well. I enjoy dropping in at J. Lohr on the weekend, and I recycle my corks there too. I visited recently and have written about it at http://napabound.blogspot.com if you're interested.
