Heron Lake Winery
Heron Lake Winery specializes in Burgundian varietals in the cool climate of Wild Horse Valley. David Mahaffey and John Newmeyer own Heron Lake Winery. The production facilities and caves are currently under construction. Mahaffey and Newmeyer currently make about 400 cases of Pinot Noir a year in the St Helena AVA.
n 1978, John Newmeyer together with other investors bought about 950 acres of land in Wild Horse Valley. Two years later, they planted 24 acres of Gewurztraminer, Riesling and Chardonnay.
The vineyard is now Chardonnay and Pinot Noir via budding-over and new planting. Newmeyer made his first wine under the Heron Lake Winery label in 1985, which remains the only winery in the AVA. The wine, branded as “Miss Olivia Brion”, is now made and barrel-aged on-site using new crush pad and cave.
Heron Lake Pinot Noir has high acidity and ripe fruit flavors. There is distinctive minerality on the finish. Newmeyer and Mahaffey attribute this to the region’s mineral laden soils.
