Heron Lake Winery specializes in Burgundian varietals in the cool climate of Wild Horse Valley. David Mahaffey and John Newmeyer own Heron Lake Winery. The production facilities and caves are currently under construction. Mahaffey and Newmeyer currently make about 400 cases of Pinot Noir a year in the St Helena AVA.
In 1978, John Newmeyer bought 1,100 acres of land in Wild Horse Valley. In 1980, he planted 17 acres of vines. Newmeyer planted Pinot Noir and Chardonnay to take advantage of the region’s cool temperatures. At less than one-half ton per acre, yields are extremely low. Newton Vineyard buys Chardonnay from this vineyard.
Heron Lake Pinot Noir has high acidity and ripe fruit flavors. There is distinctive minerality on the finish. Newmeyer and Mahaffey attribute this to the region’s mineral laden soils.
