The couple’s eldest son David is the current winemaker. He graduated from Fresno state university with a degree in enology. David’s younger sister, Kathleen, is CEO.
In 1966, Joseph Heitz made his first Martha’s Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, one of the most recognizable wines ever made in California. It is aged in French Oak for 42 months and then aged in the bottle for an additional year.
The winery makes several other wines. The Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is made with grapes from 4 different vineyards. It is aged in 2 different types of oak for 3 years.
Heitz also makes the Bella Oaks Vineyard Cab and Trailside Vineyard Cab with grapes grown in Rutherford. The winery’s selections are rounded out by Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Grignolino, Grignolino Rose, and two different Ports.
