Hawley Wine is a small producer in Northern Sonoma County’s Dry Creek Valley AVA. John Hawley handcrafts Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Viognier, and Chardonnay. Prior to starting his own winery, Hawley was the founding winemaker of Clos Du Bois and then the head winemaker at Kendall-Jackson.
Mr. Hawley brings this impressive experience to his small Sonoma venture. At Clos Du Bois and Kendall-Jackson, he was extensively schooled in classic French winemaking techniques. He aims to produce vintages that are deeply flavored but not so overwhelming that they cannot be enjoyed with food.
Hawley’s Viognier is arguably one of the best examples in California. This is an extremely tricky varietal and it largely been disappointing outside of its home in the Northern Rhone Valley’s Condrieu AC. He vinifies his Viognier in 5 to 8 year old barrels and lets it undergo malolactic fermentation. The result is a smooth, complex wine with the telltale aromas of pears, peaches, orange blossoms, and spice.
The winery’s Cabernet Sauvignon is made from 3 distinct hillside vineyards in the Dry Creek Valley AVA. This is a beautifully moderated wine which is made with grapes generally harvested under 25 BRIX.
Additionally, Hawley makes an excellent estate single vineyard Merlot, and a Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with grapes from the Russian River AVA. These wines are very popular with connoisseurs as well.
