Before establishing Hartwell Vineyards, Bob Hartwell was an enthusiastic wine collector for many years. In the mid 1980s, he decided that he wanted to pursue winemaking himself and began looking for the right piece of property.

After looking all over California, Mr. Hartwell decided that Stags Leap was the best place to focus on Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. He bought a stunning hillside estate and founded Hartwell Vineyards in 1986. In collaboration with Dick Grace of Grace Family Vineyard, the grapes for the first vintage were harvested in 1990.

From the beginning, Hartwell has not cut any corners in the vineyard or the winery. The 1990 Cabernet Sauvignon was aged in 100% French oak barrels for 22 months. Although expensive, these production techniques yield stunning wines.

Andy Erickson is the winemaker and Mario Bazan is the vineyard manager at Hartwell. Bazan meticulously cares for a few acres of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot vines. Erickson has access to a state of the art winemaking facility which was completed in 1999.
