Located 1,200 feet above sea level in the hills above Calistoga, Hans Fahden Vineyard specializes in Cabernet Sauvignon production. The Fahden Family originally purchased their land in 1912. German immigrants Hans and Marie Fahden bought the land in 1912 and grew prunes for many years.
In 1980, third generation Antone and Lyall Fahden began converting the land to vineyards. They made their first commercial vintage in 1987 and currently produce 2,500 cases annually. This includes 500 cases of their Reserve bottling.
The vineyard is grown on hillsides that are primarily made up of volcanic ash. The region’s geology is heavily influenced by massive volcanic eruptions that occurred millions of years ago. The winery takes great care to ensure that these mountain soils do not produce overly tannic wine. They accomplish this by adding Merlot to the final blend.
