Guglielmo Winery Goes Gold in Major Wine Competitions

Morgan Hill Winery Recognized for Generations of Winemaking Excellence

Guglielmo Winery in Morgan Hill is one of California's winery pioneers of the Santa Clara Valley, producing quality wines since 1925. With new wineries arriving onto the local scene, at times, Guglielmo Winery may get overlooked. It’s time to take notice of Guglielmo Winery again and recognize why they posses that “longevity” as winemakers.

Guglielmo Winery recently entered five major wine competitions and scored Gold Medals in each competition, including Double Gold and Best in Class awards. The competitions entered were the 2009 San Francisco International Wine Competition, 2009 Los Angeles International Wine & Spirits Competition, 2009 California State Fair Wine Competition, 2009 Orange County Fair Wine Competition, and 2009 Alameda County Fair – Best of the Bay Wine Competition and Zin Challenge.

Which Guglielmo Winery varietals were the big winners? The 2006 Private Reserve Estate Zinfandel, 2006 Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, and 2006 Private Reserve Sangiovese brought home the gold.

The 2006 Estate Zinfandel won Gold Medal, Best of Class twice; once at The Los Angeles International Wine & Spirits Competition and again at the California State Fair Wine Competition. It was also awarded a Gold Medal at the Alameda County Fair Zin Challenge. The Private Reserve Zinfandel is produced from estate grown Zinfandel first planted over 70 years ago and continues to produce an extremely deep-fruited Zinfandel.

The 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon scored a Double Gold Medal at the San Francisco International Wine Competition and a Gold Medal at the Orange County Fair Wine Competition. It also won Silver Medals at the California State Fair Wine Competition and Alameda County Fair – Best of the Bay Wine Competition. The Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is produced from grapes grown by Dorcich Vineyards in the Santa Clara Valley. This is the fourth bottling of the Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon from this vineyard, following on the heels of the Gold Medal winning 2003 and 2004 vintages.

The 2006 Sangiovese received a Gold Medal in Orange County Fair Wine Competition, as did the Eredita Family Reserve Port.

“You always put your best foot forward,” said Guglielmo winemaker Alan DeWitt. “It’s very gratifying when your efforts and enthusiasm are recognized.”

“These awards have definitely created buzz and excitement here at the winery,” said Herb Galindo, Marketing Director at Guglielmo. “All of us from the tasting room to the front office have been talking it up.”

Guglielmo Winery is a third generation, family owned winery that produces a wide variety of award-winning varietals from more than 100 acres of Santa Clara Valley estate vineyards, as well as from other premium winegrowing regions within California. Although the winery has grown since 1925, the Guglielmo family continues to oversee every phase of the winemaking process. Guglielmo Winery is located just minutes from the Silicon Valley.
