Gold Hill Vineyard

In 1980, Hank Battjes established Gold Hill Vineyard in the Sierra Foothills’ El Dorado AVA. Located near the town of Coloma, the winery makes Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Chardonnay, and sparkling wine.

Prior to embarking on his career in the wine industry, Mr. Battjes was employed at GTE as an electrical engineer for nearly 3 decades. He purchased a beautiful, 80 acre piece of property that was already planted with a 5 acre vineyard.

Gold Hill Vineyard has since been expanded to 50 acres. Annual production is 2,500 cases with a focus on Chardonnay, as well as grapes from Rhone Valley, Bordeaux, and Italy. In 1999, Mr. Battjes also opened a brewery on his property.

Gold Hill’s white wines include the 2004 Reserve Chardonnay, 2004 Chardonnay, 2004 Viognier, 2005 Dessert Viognier, 2005 White Zinfandel, and NV California sparkling wine.

The red wines include the 2003 Barbera, 2003 Zinfandel, 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon, 2003 Merlot, 2003 Cabernet Franc, and 2002 Syrah. Gold Hill also makes the 2004 Port-style wine with Barbera. It has 18% alcohol.
