Edna Valley Vineyard

Mark as Favorite

Edna Valley Vineyard is a joint venture between the Niven Family and Chalone Wine Group. Over the years, the property has been a laboratory for Burgundian and Rhone varietals. Several different clones of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Syrah are planted throughout the vineyard.

Edna Valley Vineyard is truly an institution in San Luis Obispo County. It is owned by both the Niven Family and Chalone Wine Group. Few other properties have been as influential in developing New World Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Syrah.

It is located approximately five miles from the Pacific Ocean and enjoys a cool, moderate climate. The growing season in this part of California is exceptionally long. Soils are comprised of clay, volcanic rocks over what was once an ancient ocean floor. The climate, growing season and soil translate to extended hang time for grapes and concentrated flavors; ideal for Pinot Noir.

Harry Hansen is the winemaker for Edna Valley Vineyard. Like many of California’s other leading winemakers, he is a graduate of the UC Davis Department of Enology and Viticulture. Mr. Hansen is recognized as one of the state’s foremost experts on Burgundy varietals and is particularly concerned with studying clonal variation.

Edna Valley Vineyard vinifies their grapes with the least intervention possible to get the desired flavors and aromas. Their philosophy is to let the natural flavors of the fruit speak for themselves.
